What are the federal laws that we have in place that protects us from discrimination when seeking employment? Here is some useful information on your rights to equal employment, as delineated and implemented by the Equal Employment Opportunity Commission (EEOC). |

| Equal Pay Act of 1963 | |||
| Under this law, employers are prohibited from discriminating between employees on the basis of sex, where one employee is paid at a lesser rate than another employee of the opposite sex. This especially applies when the job requires the same skill, responsibility and effort under the same working conditions. | |||
| Title VII of the Civil Rights Act of 1964 | |||
| This law states that employers cannot discriminate against employees on the basis of their race, color, sex or national origin. Neither can employers discriminate someone working for them based on the fact that they are in an interracial relationship with another person, such as a marriage. Employers can, however, discriminate if a certain trait is certified as a bona fide occupational qualification for the job. | |||
| Civil Rights Act of 1991 | |||
| This Act is a modification of the Civil Rights Act of 1964. Under this act, employees who file cases of discrimination against their employers have the right to a trial by jury. They can also claim damages for emotional distress from their employers. | |||
| Sections 505 and 501 of the 1973 Rehabilitation Act | |||
| These two sections of the Rehabilitation Act of 1973 prohibit discrimination against federal employees suffering from disabilities but are otherwise qualified for the positions they hold. | |||
| Americans with Disabilities (ADA) of 1990 | |||
| This Act protects the rights of disabled people working in state and local agencies as well as in the private sector. It also prohibits discrimination against them when they are otherwise qualified for the job in question. | |||
